Hair testing is commonly used in Non-DOT testing but is not yet authorized for DOT or federal workplace drug testing. For hair drug testing, head hair is typically cut as close to the scalp as possible, though leg, arm, beard, and underarm hair can be used if there’s not enough head hair (at least 1.5 inches). Hair tests offer a longer detection window (90 days) than urine tests, which typically detect drug use only within the past week.
